Review – Jose Rizal Manga

Jose Rizal Manga

cover of Jose Rizal manga chapter onePublisher TORICO of Japan recently released a manga based on the life of Dr. Jose Rizal. The art is by Ryo Konno and the story is by Takahiro Matsui. This is just in time for the birthday of our celebrated hero. I was extremely excited to see the work, being the geek that I am on anything Japanese related.

Reading manga has been a big part of my teenage years. To see something close to me on a medium I have always loved is very refreshing.  The life of our national hero has already been presented in various ways. Nevertheless, it is interesting to see the take and interpretation of the Japanese artists on our culture and social issues based on the life and works of Rizal. It is also intriguing on how they will make their rendition original and fresh.

And the release of the manga is timely too. With the current situation of our government right now, one cannot help but observe that even up to this day we are still struggling with our sovereignty.  With the celebration of the Independence Day last week also comes the question, are we really free?

Maybe this rendition of Dr. Jose Rizal’s life will make us, Filipinos, revisit the life of our forefathers and rediscover what it is about the Philippines and its sovereignty that is worth fighting for. And maybe, just maybe, we will be inspired to prioritize the country’s welfare over our own personal agenda. I hope it can be done lest we waste the efforts of our ancestors.

You can read the first chapter of the manga for free here. I’m stoked and I can’t wait for the next chapter. Save the date: the next chapter will be released on June 26, 2018, 16:00 GMT+8!
